Learning to love you more
Two ways I think about this are, the way that is understood. Taking the things that are already there and changing the way you approach something ever so slightly that you give more love.
The other is similar in that it is about actually developing your ideas about love, but it is more that you do not just take what is there but understand that the learning is happening when you are thinking about learning. new things unfamiliar objects or feelings for example, and that in turn develops your capacity for love. Part of the tape is always about the fact that I get a good feeling when I talk to this person and it makes me want to give them something in return.
It feels like the intention has to come through, there is no way that we could possibly conceal the amount of care and love we give to our art. There are all these ways of seeing that, variables to which we sometimes control completely and other times don't dare to think twice, or repeat the action a second time. I want you all to love something on the tape, they were for you, and because of you.
Dafna Ganani - Beach Scene The women lie out here barely dressed, some white knickers distributed over their bodies, top to tail. It is like relaxation, so much that their blood has spilt through the top part of the flesh in the thighs. The guiding voice seems to be helping, it is only helping them to see where they are positioned and create a picture, a picture that pleases her, but they are doing something about it.Niki Woodham- Big Vamp I originally saw this tape as a super 8 projection in Nikkie's back garden, she played a soundtrack, which was an instruction manual for children, a child psychology. I immediately liked it, because of the power the children seem to have over one another, the hierarchies are quite mixed up, they are not really based on size. I asked her to show it at the Sewing circle, a screening night I run each month, but it didn’t happen. We lost touch, when our mutual friend left town, but recently we bumped into each other and are talking about films again. The children in the video are Nikkie’s sisters and their friends.
Charlotte Prodger - The Ghost of Doctor Gretel Harp I arrived home early this morning, sleepy but still wanting to watch things. my room has become a viewing room, tapes all over. The vcr is playing up, so I decide to stick my hand in where the tape goes, there is a sticker in there, it is from another tape, it's fixed. Although I am falling asleep I want to watch your video, I know it is going to affect my dreams. It takes me a while to figure out the images, I am looking at it on it's side, my side, and it keeps moving deeper, and it is getting more specific.
Alisa anh Kottamair -Long live tourism. I don't know about Alisa, she is friends with Yoko Hata, who I met in London about three years ago. Olympia Stadium before the game. Soccer fans are still in a good mood. Hand out a few packets of smokes. A bit tentative. Am mostly disregarded, don’t know whether to smile or look indifferent. Try both. Wittemberg Platz: So many people. More hectic than at previous. A man asks what I have that he can buy. I say what does it look like. I give him a pack but refuse payment. He seems suspicious but accepts anyway. Frederichstrasse: lonely corner, sterile. An older woman passes by and seems to mutter a comment about me under her breath. At a later point, a police van passes, turns around, approaches, stops.
Janine Rostron - Planningtorock Janine is my friend in Berlin, she makes music under the title ‘Planning to rock’ this is her music on the video. She is also part of a duo called Inhabit with Leif Liebenshutz. I like her version of a pop promo.
Michelle Naismith - Heliotrope We have been friends for some time, and often supporting each other and working together, or parallel. She was the first person to show work in my Bedroom Gallery, it feels good to be her friend. I can say things like I am not coming, I need all my days at the moment. And she can say, that is fine I am really busy now before I go away and it is ok. The hand of the Witch in the video becomes very big. I have seen this before, but it is particularly strong here. Actually it is similar to the hand in Janine Rostron’s video that sweeps across the screen at one point. It is so dark behind the lilac strobe, almost like a very dark photocopy. It feels very rich, and I want to know what will be happening after the stroking has stopped.
Emily Richardson- Redshift This feels like picking up a snowstorm ornament and then everything slowing right down, it is such a relief, amongst everything. I could never imagine staying out all night in the cold feeling this, but I am happy when I watch it. Actually, the film is really a 16mm print and is best to see that way.
Melissa Castegnetto - I beg your pardon This is the part where the sun is shining on the boys face. What can of animals do you normally see? It could be dogs to reindeer, sometimes it’s not even animals, sometimes it’s patterns, why what does it mean if you see animals?
Marit Lindberg -Vampire and Skeleton I met you through somebody I don’t even know. I am glad you read the mails and now we are talking. You described the best way to see this is in a room on a monitor where you are sort of drawn towards it and then listen on headphones.
Cathy Littlejohn - Warzawa/ Home I met Cathy at the Lux centre where I work sometimes. I noticed she was wearing a scarf with what looked like a picture of David Bowie on it. She told me about her films, some of which were made in reaction to being mugged in Italy once. She showed me them, I preferred this one, it is a bit odd, but I like the way the tv becomes like a person in the house or a small dog that is around at your feet.
